Jesus, had no tools to work with,
and His only text was ancient and well worn.
His people were the poor, the lame, the deaf, the blind, the outcast...
And His method was the same with all who came to hear and learn...
He opened eyes to faith...
He opened ears with simple truth...
And opened hearts with love, a love born of forgiveness...
A gentle man, a humble man,
He asked and won no honours, no gold awards of tribute to His expertise
And yet this quiet man from the hills of Galilee fed the needs,
Fulfilled the hopes, and changed the lives of many millions...
For what He taught, brought heaven to earth and God's love to humankind.
VALE FR CHRIS KETSORE SM
As we end this semester we will be farewelling our Chaplain of the last three years, Fr Chris Ketsore SM. Fr Chris came to Marist College having recently finished his studies with the Marist Fathers of the Oceania Province at the Seminary in Fiji. In his first year Fr Chris was also completing his teaching qualifications at the Australian Catholic University in Brisbane.
Fr Chris has been a marvellous Priestly presence amongst boys, staff and families. Always approachable and flexible, Fr Chris has been a great listener and a gentle and affirming presence within our school community. Weekly Boarders’ Mass, Wednesday morning Masses, Retreat Masses, Reconciliation throughout the College, Presider at whole school College Masses, liturgies and assemblies, teacher of Religious Education in Years 7 and 8, are some of his significant contributions to the faith life of the College community. Add to this the many hours of coaching to which Fr Chis has been committed, together with his attendance and support at the full range of College co-curricular activities and we can see how much he will be missed.
We have indeed been blessed to have had Fr Chris ministering to us these past three years. He has enjoyed working with and amongst the boys of the College, and many boys have great affection for him as a result. We have enjoyed his sense of humour, his enthusiasm for school life, his leadership in prayer and liturgy, and his down-to-earth homilies in which faith and the realities of life were always so perfectly connected. Fr Chris has been a very significant member of the College Mission team. We have come to rely on his consistent, committed and easy-going nature. For our team, in particular, Fr Chris’ departure will be especially challenging.
In coming weeks Fr Chris will return to his homeland of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea, to the place where his Catholic faith and Marist vocation were first nurtured. Marist College Ashgrove wishes Fr Chris well for the next stage in his life’s journey. We thank him for all he has done and been for our school in his short time here with us. Sad that Fr Chris is leaving us, Marist College offers this prayer of blessing for him:
Lord Jesus, Word Made Flesh, from the beginning of creation you named and claimed us for yourself.
Look with kindness upon your servant, Chris, who leaves this Marist College community, marked by your cross, fed by your word, filled with our care, and sent to be your presence to all he meets.
Guide him on the way, and bless him with your wisdom, that he may be a word of hope for a world in need. May Our Good Mother look with favour upon Chris in the coming weeks and months. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
