Government House Open Day, Saturday 1 June 2019
I write to extend an invitation from the Governor of Queensland to you and your school community to visit Government House on Saturday 1 June 2019, when the Government House estate will be open to all Queenslanders, in advance of the 160th anniversary of Queensland Day on 6 June 2019.
Fernberg is a Queensland landmark that has been the home and workplace of Governors since 1910, a unique combination of private residence, busy office and symbol of the State’s prestige.
The grounds of Fernberg will be open from midday to 4pm on 1 June 2019, providing an opportunity to stroll through the 14 hectares of gardens and native bushland on the estate. The rooms of the heritage listed house will be open for self-guided tours.
Guided tours of the gardens will be available at 12.30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm to provide details of the horticulture, botanically significant trees and plants, and insights into how the horticulture team keeps the precinct in perfect presentation and provides sustainable habitat for native animals and flora.
All visitors will be welcome to explore the grounds, bring a picnic lunch and rug to relax on the grass and listen to music provided by the Australian Army Band Brisbane. Light refreshments will be available to purchase from food and drink vendors on site.
Vice Regal Dog Gavel will also be on duty throughout the day meeting guests.
The event is free and no tickets or pre-booking are required. Entry is via the Main Gate at 168 Fernberg Road, Paddington or gates near Norman Buchan Park off Baroona Road. Parking is available on streets surrounding the Estate.
I ask that you share this information about the Government House Open Day with your school community and provide details in your school calendar and P&C notices.
The Governor looks forward to welcoming visitors to Government House on Open Day 2019.
