The College offers a large variety of ensembles encompassing many standards, musical styles and genres. These ensembles are grouped in five major strands.
Strings & Symphony
The College has a symphony orchestra and four string ensembles that rehearse every week. The Symphony Orchestra and Chamber String Ensemble are comprised of students of the highest standard but the college caters for students of all abilities. There is a Grade 5 string program in the Junior School, which provides all boys the opportunity to learn a stringed instrument.
The College currently has four wind ensembles: Wind Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Wind Ensemble and Concert Band and two Percussion Ensembles. These groups cater for the large number of students who learn a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument across Grades 5 to 12. Each group is afforded a number of performing opportunities throughout the year and the Grade 6 band program is a feature of the College offering boys the chance to begin a band instrument.
There are currently three major choral ensembles at the College: Marist Voices, Performance Choir and Chamber Choir. Marist Voices is a group catering for unchanged voices and comprises of students aged 10-13yrs. The Performance Choir consists of changed voice types (including Bass, Baritone and Tenor) and is also involved in various College masses throughout the year. The Chamber Choir is an auditioned group that requires musical skills of a higher level.
The College currently has four Big Bands and several small Jazz Ensembles that cater for a wide level of skills, from basic through to advanced. There is a focus in the program on developing improvisational and listening skills that are integral to the development of a good understanding of the jazz idiom.
The College also offers a wide variety of small and chamber ensembles that rehearse each week including string quartets, guitar groups, Celtic group, and various wind, percussion and contemporary ensembles.
