THE HOUSE SYSTEM

Established in the College in 1993, the House system is intended to facilitate and support quality pastoral care of all the boys. Ideally, every boy will be well known, involved, often encouraged and well advised. Upon enrolment in the secondary school each boy is placed in one of eight Houses. As a general rule he will remain in that House throughout his time at Ashgrove.

Each student will be in a group of boys, drawn from each of the Years 8-12. The staff appointed to the House normally remains with that House. Heads of House and Tutors are very important contacts for parents. Ideally, as students progress through the College, a partnership should develop between parents and House staff.

EPHREM After Br Ephrem Stevens, missioner and long serving teacher here, tireless worker in the beautifying of the College.	FOLEY After Mr Tom Foley, first president of the Parents and Friends Association, exemplary supporter and energetic leader.	GILROY After Mrs Kitty Gilroy, teacher, musician, loyal friend of the College, a member of staff for 25 years.	HAROLD After Br Harold Carlson, pioneer of the College, worker extraordinary in shaping our foundation.
IGNATIUS After Br Ignatius O’Connor, foundation Headmaster, visionary and worker extraordinary in the foundation and early development of the College.	RIDLEY After Mr Des Ridley, outstanding schoolboy and Old Boy and gifted sportsman. He died, tragically, very young.	RUSH After Archbishop Francis Rush, retired Archbishop of Brisbane, leader to and ever-encouraging friend of the College.	SLATTERY After Mr Leo Slattery, long serving member of our teaching staff, exemplary for his commitment to the College.

Together with familiarity and continuity, the House system allows greater participation by the boys in House and inter-House activities. Being active, contributing, co-operating - all can build in boys a growing sense of belonging and ownership. Likewise, the necessity for leadership, increasing as it does as the boys move into higher Year groups, should result in more boys assuming ever widening responsibilities and practising that leadership.
