The MATES BBQ provides meals for some of the local homeless community of Brisbane. The meals are create an opportunity for conversation and the growth of relationships between students and those with whom we share a meal. The BBQ is currently held every Wednesday night in one of the local parks in South Brisbane.
The BBQ is organised by the College Communities of Marist Ashgrove and Marist Rosalie. It is is supported by Marist Young Adult Ministry of Brisbane and, financially, by Marist Ashgrove’s St Vincent de Paul Conference.
Together, adults and students share the vision of Marcellin Champagnat, the founder of the Marist Brothers. In the spirit of Luke 2:19, we aim to meet and journey with others in our community, reflecting upon what we see, hear and learn. The key to this community is Presence.
Via our presence we endeavour the following:
- to continually recognise and honour the dignity of the Human Person
- the Nurturing of Right Relationships with our patrons and each other
- to stand in solidarity with, and offer hope and companionship to those who experience isolation, loneliness and alienation
Through our presence and hospitality we aim to meet Christ present in and appealing to us through the marginalised. We aim via our hospitality to develop genuine relationships and offer a sense of belonging and community. |
