ESL

Marist College Ashgrove has an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, who offers support to students from non-English speaking backgrounds. This specialist assistance enables ESL students to meet the language requirements of the curriculum so they can feel part of the Marist family community.

ESL students are provided with a study program, which is in context with their current subject choices. Although lessons focus mainly on English grammar, vocabulary and expression, the program aims to improve the students' language ability in all subject areas across the curriculum. Priority is given to recent arrivals and those with greater English language needs.

Regular discussions between the ESL teacher, class teachers & other support staff help to:

* overcome difficulties students are facing with the language demands of the curriculum
* adapt teaching resources for use with ESL learners
* apply appropriate assessment procedures
* meet the social and cultural needs of ESL students.
